A Brave Warrior, Rachel Held Evans

When I was leaving the church there were a few women bloggers I read religiously. I felt they understood where I was mentally and spiritually. Rachel Held Evans was the leader of the pack. She was my CS Lewis during that time.

Her writing full of wisdom, grace and strength encouraged me when evangelicals embraced and championed the most dishonest and evil man ever to run for president and I realized the American Evangelical church in it's current state was dead to me.

She studied hard and cared deeply about knowing the bible because she loved it. She wrote books about this book that she loved and to me, I could see that she always read the bible through the lenses of Jesus love for humanity.

Rachel died yesterday after going into the hospital a month ago with the flu. She was 37 years old. She left behind her husband Dan, 2 year old son and a 1 year old daughter.

Someone ask on Twitter to for us to tweet our most memorial writing or statement of hers. I couldn't yesterday. I think I was in shock. I didn't really cry until last night when I read this tweet,

But the most prominent memory of Rachel to me is that overall feeling that she got me.

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”

C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
When she wrote about being ostracized from her church community because of her views, I felt that.
Even though we only conversed over social media and I never met her in person, so many times I would read her writing and think "What? You too?"

I'm so sad for her family. So very sad. Last night I said "God, I don't understand, how is this GOOD?" He didn't answer but I found myself praying for peace and comfort. Peace and comfort for her family. Peace and comfort for Jaime Wright who lost her son to suicide not long ago and who has now lost a friend. Why so much loss and heartbreak, God? Peace and comfort please Jesus for us all.
