Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word

It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's gettin' more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

Like an Elton John song, our world of black and white, polar opposites, extremes, high platforms of privilege where we look down and swear we are standing level with the masses, make it so hard to be wrong, admit we are wrong, say we are wrong. Say we are sorry.

Change our minds.

We are closed to new thought, ideas, considering that what we think and believe to be true, may not be.

What we think of someone else may be wrong.

We dig our heals in to not be moved or we bury our heads in the sand so we don't have to see, then we can just claim ignorance.

Because it is truly bliss.

But there really is no escape.

The voices are loud and frequent. Social media gives us all lofty stages to prance on, make our stand, recruit followers, dig our heals in and stand firm.

But what if we're wrong?

Do you ever doubt?

Do you ever question what you believe?

I mean really question it.

But how could you say you doubt?

Say you question?

Change your mind without losing your religion? Without losing your empire of stone?

No one wants to be controlled by victims, have their actions dictated by how they respond to the least of these.

The underdog, the persecuted, the outcast.

Oh they just have a "victim mentality".

Excuse accepted, it's them not you, "nothing to see here folks, move along."

And so we paint ourselves the victim of the victim mentality predators, We pound our chest like monkeys in the wild saying "I am the victim, not you, I am not privileged! The leaches will take all I have! My fear will build a mote around my fortress of thought, they are dangerous! How dare you not see my money, status, piety is my cage. I am a victim of you my poor neighbor, I have to look at you. I am a victim of you my gay neighbor, I don't understand you and you disgust me, I don't want to consider you. I am a victim of you black person, you try to make me say I'm sorry when I have nothing to be sorry for. Oh you girl, I will not even acknowledge you."

When you can't be wrong because it will cost too much, when you want the other side to admit wrong first, when you see all the evidence that change is coming but you just can't accept it.

It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's gettin' more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word
