Soul Cravings and Mark Driscoll

I am reading this book right now and it is so good! It's all about how we crave love. This guy has amazing insight into what makes us "tick". He reminds me of C.S. Lewis but much easier to read and he talks a lot more about our emotions, thoughts and feelings then Lewis did.

Erwin McMannus (the author) has a Mega church in Los Angeles CA. It's very Artsy! Lots of Drama's, music, free sprit stuff. He is very much a rebel, I think. Yet, he is part of the current Christian movement towards love and service.

I love that I am living in this time. I love that I can be a part of a church that really does believe the greatest commandment "love the lord your God with all your heart soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself".

Erwin McMannus preaches this, writes about this and helps us all to do this better.

Mark Driscoll

I am guessing that Mark Driscoll doesn't like what Erwin McMannus says or believes. I can't be sure of this, but from everything I have read or heard from Driscoll, he's not real big on the "Love" thing.

In case you don't know who Mark Driscoll is, he is the pastor of a Mega Church in Seatle Washington, called Mars Hill. He is very popular among the "church leadership, Emergent", types. He is very smart, educated and cool and he has a huge following. I like half of what he has to say usually but he always finds a way to make everything the woman's fault, from why Christians don't drink beer to Ted Haggards fall, he finds a way to blame women. He really is a Jerk.

(according to Wikipedia the word Jerk means-A person, usually male, who is unwelcome due to unlikable qualities and behavior)

Here are just a few nuggets from Pastor Driscoll..

"...Most pastors I know do not have satisfying, free, sexual conversations and liberties with their wives. ..... It is not uncommon to meet pastors' wives who really let themselves go; they sometimes feel that because their husband is a pastor, he is therefore trapped into fidelity, which gives them cause for laziness. A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband's sin, but she may not be helping him either."

"..As feminism grew in America during the turn of the 20th century the women’s suffrage and prohibition movements were the practical results of a feminine piety that came to also dominate the church as more women became pastors and the church became more feminine. Some denominations began to condemn alcohol as sinful and the Methodist pastor Dr. Thomas Welch created the very “Christian” Welch’s grape juice to replace communion wine in 1869. The marriage of Christianity and feminism helped to create a dry nation that put out of business all but the largest brewers who were able to survive on near beer and root beer which explains why today American beer is largely mass produced, watered down, light on calories, and feminine in comparison to rich and dark European beers.."

"The major blind spot of mega churches is that they tend to be very effeminate with aesthetics, music, and preaching perfectly tailored for moms...many of the men who find it appealing are the types to sing prom songs to Jesus and learn about their feelings while sitting in a seafoam green chair drinking herbal tea—the spiritual equivalent of Richard Simmons."

Bill Hybel and Mark Driscoll

I think just about every Churchy person has heard of Willow Creek right? Well Bill Hybel (the pastor of Willow Creek) had a little rift with Mr. Driscoll at a recent Church Planters convention. Seems that Mr. Hybel and Mr. Driscoll were speakers at the convention, Mark didn't come in person but sent a taped message about Church planting, It was played at the convention, Bill Hybel came up after the clip and spoke a little rebuke to the very anti-women-in-leadership slant on the video. Then convention organizers pulled the tape from the packet that was to be distributed to all that attended.

Good Soldier

I have watched the video and it is very Driscoll. After reading his and his wife's writings and adding this video to that, you get a big picture of a man trying to get men to act like men by knocking women down, he is always putting women in their place. Driscoll has way to many God given gifts to waste them on being a Jerk towards women. It's sad that he doesn't see it or doesn't think he has a problem. But it's even sadder that he will take many men down this road with him.

Very informative, Carole. I realize that we are taking pieces of his work out to prove a point, but, I agree. He's quite the jerk. You can't say all that and not be. I haven't read any of his books because the previews just didn't resonate with me. I'm glad I saved my money. Wow.

I looked at the Joyce article, but it said it was by Mark Moore.

ok, I watched the Good Soldier. Yikes! I love how he can define other people's views and preferences as "retarded" or "hippie" and "gay", but he can walk around with that necklace on and he's apparently a stud getting "sex at least once a day". Amazing! He is so offensive, and I am judging him as such. Unbeliveable!

The Joyce Meyers peice was written on his blog but your right, it was by another guy. I took it off this post. Thanks for the heads up.

I gotta say that I don't agree with everything Mark Driscoll says, and I can understand why some women could find some of his thoughts hurtful, but I wouldn't write off what he has to say because you think he's a jerk. For the record, I've never heard him rip on women for acting like women, or even blaming them for much of anything. What I do hear him often do is criticize men for acting like women.

There are some things about the guy that makes him much less user friendly than your average mega church pastor, he can be downright offensive, but he also has some great stuff to say about the need for men to step up and lead - their families, their churches, their lives. And if nothing else, I admire the guy's willingness to say it how it is - kind of reminds me of the apostle Paul (who, by the way, also said a number of things that could be labeled as chauvinistic.)

I respect what Aaron says. I just don't have it in me for guys like Driscol. I am very glad, Aaron, if he has helped you. I'm being sincere (not sarcastic). Unfortunately, for whatever social, spiritual, or crazy reasons, men in the Christian world (especially the South, baby) have used a lot of Biblical excuses to treat women with disdain. I just wish M.D. were emphasizing "loving your wife as Christ loves the church", more than "manly leadership". (And by that I don't mean loving her real good at least once a day!) Sorry, but he creeps me out. And I'm not sure what you mean by women acting like women and men acting like women. Are you (or is he) referring to homosexuality? You're glasses are cool, though. I'm sure you are as well. Hope to have an insightful dialogue...

ok, i watched the good soldier video. i also watched another video he did about men being "sissies" in the church and acting like women. the "real men" are at home watching football. i take offense to this, i must say. my husband- along with A LOT of guys I know at HPC- are manly, macho men of God. they love football, but prefer God and the HPC life. he goes on to gloat about how his church is 1/2 men in their early-twenties... congratulations! instead of bashing the church as a whole, why dont you concentrate on treating women as equals instead of worrying about how many times they have sex with their husbands everyday!!!??

C.S. Lewis had a remarkable way of expressing truth as God revealed it to him. He did so in an articulate and non-prescriptive way. I think he would be loath to call anyone a "jerk," regardless of how vehemently he disagreed with them. We do well to heed such humility. Jesus once said that if a person is not against us they're with us. Here's to following Jesus, regardless of what anyone around us is saying or doing.

You are correct. I was too harsh. I actually listen to his pod cast and I did repent for this post later.
