COVID19, Time to Ignore Stupid People

Dean and I were finally able to get our first shot of the Covid Vaccine yesterday. My arm still hurts, I had to put ice on it last night and I felt kinda shitty but I'm OK with those side effects if it means soon I won't worry ALL THE DAMN TIME that I could get COVID. I won't always have in the back of my mind that a cough or scratchy throat in our household could be COVID. I'll be able to go dancing and sing karaoke without fear, travel more and not worry that someone I know and love will get it and die!

I am so sick and tired of COVID! I'd say the overwhelming majority of people I know have had COVID. I know six people who've died from it. I'm so thankful for doctors, nurses and scientists who've been fighting the virus for a year now.

And yet the assholes...always there be assholes.

Dean posted a picture of himself getting the shot on his Facebook and of course, a couple people felt they just had to comment in a negative, disapproving way.

Attention-seeking "patriots" and fighters for liberty, Anti-maskers, and Anti-Vaxxers can't help themselves, bless their little hearts. They're always about the work of making America great again. Take us back to the days of Polio, casual bar and barn animal hook-ups without fear of disease and everyone who isn't white or male in their proper place.

I exaggerate, maybe, ha!

But Facebook is the devil. Period.

Anyway, all that to say, I've learned not to feed the fear-based division they live for and are working to create. All the videos of Anti-maskers and Anti-vaxxers prove is to not video them, don't respond, or police environments. They love the attention. I admit that in the past I've left a couple of Yelp reviews, posted my concerns about various businesses that don't follow mask guidelines but now I see that every time someone confronts them or even acknowledges their ignorance, we give their ugly Victim Mentality cloak a showy twirl.

And by the way, I was once an anti-vaxxer so I know people can change. I am hopeful this virus and the new way this vaccination is structured will change hearts and minds. Right now though, this post is from a place of annoyance and anger with people who seem to only hear the noise inside their chosen echo-chamber.

Herd Immunity

Herd immunity, or community immunity, is when a large part of the population of an area is immune to a specific disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, such as a virus or bacteria, it has nowhere to go.

While not every single individual may be immune, the group as a whole has protection. This is because there are fewer high-risk people overall. The infection rates drop, and the disease peters out.

Herd immunity protects at-risk populations. These include babies and those whose immune systems are weak and can’t get resistance on their own...Researchers think that the R0 for COVID-19 is between 2 and 3. This means that one person can infect two to three other people. It also means 50% to 67% of the population would need to be resistant before herd immunity kicks in and the infection rates start to go down.

Our country and the world are on the way to herd immunity. When that's achieved, the anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers who lack mental currency to move away from the fear of science and rational thinking and into consideration of all humankind, will all come under the herd immunity umbrella we've created. They will receive the generosity of governments working for all their citizen's health and well-being, including the health and well-being of stupid people.
