Smells Like Teen Spirit

The label "Grudge Rock" really does say it all about the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by the band Nirvana.

The first time I heard it I was like "what the heck? They are all playing different stuff." But I liked it, in a disturbing way. I guess because it sounded like intense angst turned into music.

The sound created by Nirvana and other grunge rockers, permanently changed the sound of rock music. That "messy" sound, that four chords banged out, dominates modern Christian rock/worship music to this day. Heck, Joel Houston of Hillsong United even looks like Kurt Cobain!

This song is a classic. I dig it. The Title, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" totally wins for best named song ever (there's a deodorant named Teen Spirit) and the lyrics are pretty prophetic of the current generation, even though it was written in 1991.

I'd say even of church going youth, "here we are now, entertain us"...

ARTIST: Nirvana
TITLE: Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lyrics and Chords

Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know, a dirty word

/ E A G C / :

Hello, hello, hello, how low (3X)
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
