Twilight and Porn

Someone told my daughter that the Twilight movies had the same effect on a teenage girls brains as porn does on the brain.

As someone who struggled with porn from the age of twelve until well into adulthood, and as someone who had teenage movie crushes, I can say without hesitation, there is no comparison.

They say "the Twilight series creates unrealistic expectations of romance in the minds of young girls as porn creates unreal expectations of sex in the minds of men". Ok, if Twilight creates unreal romantic expectations then so does anything and everything ever made by Disney,  every fairy tale, and every Nicolas Sparks book/movie! Every "Happily ever after", every fictional story ever made about love.

And to state the obvious, It's a Vampire and a Werewolf fighting over a human....fiction, not real.

Teenage girls DO know that.

As a teenager I read the book The Outsiders, then watched the movie about 100 times. I also had 130 posters of Matt Dillion on my walls. He was my teen crush.

As a 12 year old I went to a neighbors house and looked at porn magazines. Again and again, I would seek out times to look at them. I felt dirty, I felt drawn to them. Then as an adult, while attempting to avoid porn, I fantasized, I drew on the reservoir of porn images scared into my brain. When I would walk into a video store, I felt that craving, that pull to the images on the cover of videos. It had a powerful effect that was hard to control. I felt dirty and controlled by porn.  But it got much worse as an adult when access to the Internet became a part of our home, the draw was much stronger and it was so easy to watch now. The guilt, the shame, the secret, the damage was all very real.

Twilight is my 14 year old daughters The Outsiders. It's not her porn. It's not any girls porn. Their porn is on their cell phones and their lap tops.

For someone to reduce the effects of porn to "it creates unrealistic expectations" and to compare the effects of the Twilight series to porn is at best naive and at worst, one of the reason the church does such a poor job of addressing the real issue of porn and helping people over come addiction to it.

I thank God for sites like XXXchurch and Dirtygirlsministries.com for working to educate the church on what porn does to us, to society, to the church, what it really is. The Twilight series is not even close to being porn to anyone or having the same effect on anyone's brain as porn does.

Carol, thanks for being so transparent in your blog here. People don't understand what they talk about unless they've been through it or something. Praise God you're set free and able to use your testimony to set others free!

as a person that use to struggle with porn (amongst other things)...i hated it when leaders at church would say that twilight or any other romantic movies and novels are like porn for women. we had a pastor that said that over and over and over.

everytime i heard it i just rolled my eyes.

thanks for writing this.

So well said, Carole. And it so frustrates me when people use shame to try and control others.

Carol,
I know of you/your blog through RLC. Today, God prompted me to update my google reader for the first time in, well...a year, I think...and there you were with this fantastically real post. Thank you. I have wondered for years how to accurately describe my own struggle with porn and how to educate friends and family that women struggle too. I know your post was about Twilight, which honestly is why it caught my attention, and you were dead-on with your assessment. But I just wanted to say thank you for your candor and transparency with such a taboo subject. We all need to shed the light; we all crave freedom. Thanks for being a freedom fighter!
