BRDC Volunteer Opportunities

Jump Start
Every week we offer a pre-school literacy program for children ages 2-5. From Wednesday thru Friday, 9am until noon, this free program helps children prepare for school while giving mom’s a much needed break. Children learn their letters, numbers and colors in a fun environment that promotes social development and important life skills. If you are interested in becoming involved in Jump Start, please contact Margaret Williams at

After School Program
Every weekday from 3pm-6pm we open our doors to the youth in the community. In an effort to build relationships and offer positive avenues of recreation, we offer young people ages 12-18 the chance to be involved in sports, art, dance, music and a myriad of other activities. By Spring 2008 we expect to offer tutoring, computer classes and a variety of other educational opportunities.

We are in need of volunteers who are willing to give up a few hours of their time to pour into the lives of these young people. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a stay-at-home mom or a teacher, everyone has something to offer. More than anything else, these kids need someone to care about them and their lives. If you are interested in volunteering with our after school program please contact Craig Boutte at

Street Youth Outreach
Most of us don’t like to think about homeless youth, at-risk kids or child prostitutes. Unfortunately, just because we don’t like them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In an effort to bring hope into some hopeless situations, we have recently started an outreach targeted specifically for this population. We will be going to the streets to reach these kids by offering food, care kits and a listening ear. Our goal is to develop enough trust with these young people that they will allow us to help them to seek another life.

Drop In Center
Along with our street outreaches we will also be offering a drop-in center where homeless and at-risk youth can take a shower, wash their clothes and spend some time with people who really care. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to serve a forgotten and discarded population. It may not always be easy, but the rewards will be phenomenal. Outreaches and drop-in hours vary (day and night), so please contact Charity Trahan at
Charityjune@hotmail(dot)com for more information.

Ladies Thrive Support Group
Every Friday we host a support group for women in the community to help them deal with the pressure of everyday life. Most of these women face violence, drug addiction and poverty on a continual basis. They are struggling to make right choices in their lives, and in the lives of their children. They are in desperate need of Godly counsel and a friendly face.

After a brief teaching the women are divided into small groups where they have the opportunity to discuss the issues they’re facing. After group we share a meal together before bussing them back home. We are in need of volunteers to help with transportation, hospitality and group support. The hours are approximately 9:30am-1pm every Friday. If you are interested in becoming involved in Ladies Thrive please contact Alliece Cole at

Warehouse Prep
Every Thursday a group of volunteers help sort food, inventory products and prepare grocery bags for the weekend outreaches. We meet at 450 Roselawn on Thursday mornings at 9am and usually wrap up around 12:30pm. If you are interested in being part of our behind-the-scenes prep team please contact Alliece Cole at

Saturday Outreach
If your heart beats for the poor and the hurting then you need to check out the Baton Rouge Dream Center . Reaching out to the inner city through block parties, grocery giveaways, and street outreach, the BRDC endeavors to bring light to the darkness and hope to the hopeless. Jesus came for the prostitutes, runaways, drug addicts and throw-aways; join us on the streets as we seek out that which is lost.

Every Saturday at 10am we meet at 450 Roselawn for street outreach.

Homeless Outreach
On Thursday mornings we serve a hot meal to the homeless population of Baton Rouge . Volunteers meet at Annex 1 for prayer at 6:30am before loading up and driving to the 2600 block of Florida Blvd (across from VOA and Pelican Pawn). So often these precious men and women spend their lives being overlooked and ignored by society. By providing a free meal and a listening ear, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

The homeless men are also given the opportunity to find purpose by serving Friday mornings during Ladies Thrive. While the women are inside receiving ministry in a support group, the men are outside building relationships and being discipled by Godly male volunteers. For more information about either of our homeless outreaches please contact
Craig.Boutee@healingplacechurch(d0t)orgor Jason.Laird@healingplacechurch(dot)org

Midnight Outreach
Once a month we go to the streets in search of those who have somehow lost their way and have found themselves involved in drugs, violence and the sex industry. Whether they’re dancing at a strip club or selling drugs on the corner, we believe that God has a purpose for them. Through handing a dancer a rose or giving a dealer a cold drink, we have seen these simply acts of kindness speak volumes about the love of God to these lost and hurting people. For more information about Midnight Outreach please contact Alliece Cole at
